The Celtic or lever harp has been invented at the beginning of the 20th century during the new revival of traditional Irish music that took place both in Europe and USA.
Many collections were published at the time, and new arrangements of the ancient music were invented. Plus, a lot of dances and marches from the fiddle and piper repertoire where added at the specific repertoire of this new instrument.
This new harp used to have gut strung but, in recent models, has started having nylon strung. It’s lighter than the Early Irish Harp and had a hooked mechanism, which later turned into a lever one, able to change the sound of each string. Thanks to that, the musician could play music in all the tonalities.
It has always been played with a finger pads technique, like the pedal harp, and held on the right shoulder.
The Celtic Harp is more famous than the Early Irish Harp and, nowadays, is considered to be the most common Irish Harp. This instrument is often used to approach the Pedal harp, for it’s smaller and lighter and, above all, less expensive to buy.
Me and the Celtic Harp
I usually perform with my Celtic harp as soloist, playing a lineup full of irish airs, laments, dances and marches. I always share the story of each composition, along with some details about the composer.
I also spread the knowledge about Celtic harp during workshops and private lessons, both for adults and kids from the age of 5.

L’arpa celtica o arpa a levette è uno strumento nato agli inizi del 20° secolo quando sia in Europa che in America si assiste ad un revival della musica tradizionale irlandese.
Si moltiplicarono le raccolte e gli arrangiamenti e la nuova arpa celtica aggiunse al proprio repertorio diversi tipi di danze, tipici della tradizione del fiddle e delle pipers.
Questa nuova arpa celtica montava inizialmente corde in budello e poi in nylon, è più leggera dell’arpa gaelica e aveva un meccanismo, da prima ad uncini e successivamente a levette, per alterare i suoni di ciascuna corda. In questo modo i musicisti potevano suonare in tutte le tonalità in cui le nuove ma antiche musiche venivano proposte.
Viene da sempre suonata con i polpastrelli, appoggiandola sulla spalla destra, e la sua tecnica deriva da quella dell’arpa classica.
L’arpa celtica è sicuramente più conosciuta dell’arpa gaelica e al momento viene considerata come l’arpa irlandese per eccellenza. Molto spesso lo studio di questo strumento viene usato come propedeutico per la tradizionale arpa classica, essendo più piccolo e trasportabile, oltre ad essere meno impegnativo a livello economico.

Con l’arpa celtica propongo concerti da solista con un programma che varia dalle arie ai lamenti, dalle danze alle marce, cercando sempre di raccontare la storia di ogni brano e del suo compositore.
Mi occupo inoltre di diffondere la conoscenza di questo strumento attraverso seminari di approfondimento e lezioni individuali rivolti sia ad adulti che a bambini a partire dai 5 anni.
