The lever harp
The lever harp has been made at the beginning of the 19th century as a more easy harp to carry around then the Pedal harp. It had an immediate success and it soon become known as the only Irish harp.
At the beginning the harpists were playing European music on this instrument but lately, at the beginning of the 19th century, during the revival of the Celtic music, many collections were published and new arrangements of the ancient music were invented. Plus, a lot of dances and marches from the fiddle and piper repertoire where added at the specific repertoire of this new instrument.
This new harp used to have gut strings but, in recent models, has started having nylon strings. It had a hooked mechanism, which later turned into a levers one, able to change the sound of each string. Thanks to that, the musician could play music in all the tonalities.
It has always been played with a finger pads technique, like the pedal harp, and held on the right shoulder.
The Lever Harp is more famous than the Irish Harp and, nowadays, is considered to be the most common harp in Ireland. This instrument is often used to approach the Pedal harp, for it’s smaller and lighter and, above all, less expensive to buy.

L’arpa a levette
L’arpa levette è uno strumento nato agli inizi del 19° secolo in quanto molto più facile da trasportare delle grandi arpe a pedali. Ebbe presto un enorme successo e in breve diventò l’unica arpa irlandese conosciuta.
Inizialmente il repertorio suonato con questo strumento erano classici brani europei con facili alterazioni. Ma all’inizio del 20° secolo, quando i revival celtici presero piede sia in Europa che in America, si moltiplicarono le raccolte e gli arrangiamenti e la nuova arpa a levette aggiunse al proprio repertorio diversi tipi di danze, tipici della tradizione del fiddle e delle pipers.
Questa nuova arpa a levette montava inizialmente corde in budello, che vennero sostituite con corde in nylon nelle arpe più moderne. Era munita di un meccanismo ad uncini che venne poi trasformato nel meccanismo a levette che conosciamo al giorno d’oggi. In questo modo i musicisti potevano suonare in tutte le tonalità.
Viene da sempre suonata con i polpastrelli, appoggiandola sulla spalla destra, e la sua tecnica deriva da quella dell’arpa classica.
L’arpa a levette è sicuramente più conosciuta dell’arpa irlandese e al momento viene considerata come l’arpa irlandese per eccellenza. Molto spesso lo studio di questo strumento viene usato come propedeutico per la tradizionale arpa classica, essendo più piccolo e trasportabile, oltre ad essere meno impegnativo a livello economico.
